In May of 2013, N and I took our second trip to Scotland. While the first trip back in 2009 was full of Guinness and castles and other genuinely fun touristy things, this trip led us down entirely different paths.
There is a company out there called H&I Adventures which specialize in mountain bike tours disguised as vacations. It might be the other way around, but at least for me, the amount of swearing that came out of my mouth really made me think I was on a bike tour more than a vacation. BUT! Before you start thinking “Oh, that sounds miserable” do know that I was only miserable for… moments. And as soon as those moments passed? I was on top.of.the.world. This was a vacation unlike anything I’ve ever done – challenging and adventurous, full of long days, good food, and great people. Simply put? it was the trip of a lifetime.
We arrived in Edinburgh and had about 34 hours to get ourselves sorted out with food, sleep, and general discombobulation (love that word.) Crossing an ocean is hard work guys, and it is TOUGH to get back on your feet that fast. We found an incredible pub inside Edinburgh University aptly named the Library Bar (it was an old library – awesome!) where I ate what I think was mushrooms laced with crack. Seriously, these were to die for.
After stuffing our faces and sleeping mostly at night, we hopped on a train that would take us to Inverness, the highland capital of Scotland. And this my friends, is where our blood, sweat, and tear filled adventure would begin.
