writing

I consider most of this blog what Anne Lamott would call “shitty first drafts.” It’s certainly not my best writing, and maybe not my favorite writing. But you know what? It’s me – writing. And that is what is the essential, important fact. Because for so long, I never posted here because I realized the posts weren’t perfect, weren’t organized, some weren’t even what I’d call ‘good’. This need for perfection kept me from writing at all, and I fell into the spiraling downward circle.

“Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life, and it is the main obstacle between you and a shitty first draft. I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won’t have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren’t even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they’re doing it.”

― Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

That being said, there are a few posts that I’m proud of (which I will hopefully link here when I have the time and energy to sift through my blog) and a few posts that, despite my best efforts to squash the perfectionism bug, will never see the public light of day.

So don’t judge my writing too harshly, and for the love of pete please don’t try anything I write about. I am not a professional in anything that I do in life, and for that very reason, you will never, ever see a “how to canyoneer” post on this blog. But I do hope you enjoy my “shitty first drafts”, since it takes great courage and stamina to keep the compulsive part of me from deleting everything that comes out on this little corner of the internet.

And for the record – I am loving not being perfect.

    • Why thank you! I am certainly enjoying being able to let go of my “must edit 76 times before publishing” – slightly compulsive habit. It’s always good to hear that someone enjoys my little corner of the web.
